Welcome to BigFoil.com — a database of shapes, data, and other information pertinent to 2D airfoil sections.
Sections are provided largely by the UIUC Airfoil Coordinates Database or generated programmatically by Martin Hepperle's JavaFoil. A handful of sections were sourced from NACA-TR-824 and other freely available sources.
For each shape, scripted XFOIL, JavaFoil, and NeuralFoil batch runs were used to compute lift, drag, and moment polars across a range of Reynolds numbers, Mach numbers, and surface roughnesses. Data was also generated with JavaFoil for plain-flapped sections with varying chord length and deflection angle.
Where available, wind tunnel data has been imported — largely from the UIUC Low-Speed Airfoil Tests and NACA-TR-824. CFD data has also been imported or calculated for select airfoils, such as NACA0012 from the NASA Langley Turbulence Modeling Resource. For each airfoil I share the DAT and DXF files, show the Venkataraman (four-spline) fit parameters, list the top 20 most similarly-shaped airfoils, and provide:
- Cl vs α, Cd vs α, Cm vs α, Cl/Cd vs α, Cd and Cl/Cd vs Cl, Cl vs Cd, Cm vs Cl, etc...
- The above data plotted for various Mach numbers to examine compressibility effects.
- The above data plotted for various surface roughness settings.
- Data for plain-flapped sections across a range of flap lengths and deflection angles, useful for approximating aileron effects.
